Tyre Puncture: What Drivers Should Know About Repairs and Prevention

Why a Tyre Puncture Should Not Be Ignored

A tyre puncture can happen unexpectedly, whether caused by a nail, screw, sharp object, road debris, or another hazard. Even a slow puncture can eventually reduce tyre pressure enough to affect vehicle handling and safety.

Driving with an underinflated or damaged tyre can increase heat buildup, reduce steering stability, and accelerate tyre wear. For this reason, drivers should respond promptly when they notice a puncture or sudden pressure loss.

Common Causes of Tyre Punctures

Sharp objects are among the most obvious causes of punctures. Nails, screws, broken glass, and metal debris can penetrate the tread and allow air to escape slowly.

Punctures can also occur when a tyre strikes a pothole or curb. The impact may damage the tyre or wheel and sometimes causes sidewall damage.

Valve problems can create symptoms similar to a puncture. A damaged or leaking valve may allow air to escape gradually even when the tyre itself has no visible hole.

Poor tyre condition can increase the risk of problems. Worn tread, cracks, bulges, and damaged sidewalls are warning signs that should be inspected professionally.

How to Identify a Slow Puncture

A slow puncture may not be immediately obvious. The vehicle might appear normal after inflation but lose pressure again within days.

Drivers may notice that one tyre repeatedly requires more air than the others. Uneven handling, vibration, or a tyre-pressure warning light can also indicate a problem.

Regularly checking tyre pressure makes it easier to identify gradual pressure loss. Drivers should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressures rather than relying on the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.

Can Every Punctured Tyre Be Repaired?

Not every puncture is suitable for repair. The location, size, and type of damage all matter.

A small puncture in the appropriate area of the tread may sometimes be professionally repaired. However, damage to the sidewall or shoulder can be more serious because these areas experience significant flexing during driving.

A technician should inspect the tyre internally when appropriate rather than relying only on a quick external examination. Driving on a severely underinflated tyre can cause internal damage that may make repair unsafe.

What to Do After a Puncture

If a tyre suddenly loses pressure while driving, reduce speed gradually and move to a safe location. Avoid sudden steering or braking.

If the vehicle has a spare tyre and the driver is equipped to change it safely, the spare may provide a temporary solution. Some modern vehicles use tyre repair kits or run-flat tyres instead, so drivers should understand the equipment supplied with their vehicle.

A temporary repair should not be treated as a permanent solution unless it has been properly assessed and repaired according to appropriate standards.

Preventing Future Tyre Problems

Regular tyre inspections can help prevent unexpected issues. Check tread condition, sidewalls, tyre pressure, and signs of uneven wear.

Wheel alignment and suspension condition should also be considered if tyres wear unevenly. Incorrect alignment can cause excessive wear and reduce tyre lifespan.

Avoiding potholes and road debris where possible can also reduce the risk of impact and puncture damage.

When Professional Tyre Assistance Is Needed

A professional tyre technician can determine whether a tyre puncture is repairable or whether replacement is safer. They can also check for secondary damage, inspect the wheel, and confirm that the tyre is properly inflated.

Drivers should never assume that a tyre is safe simply because it can be inflated again. Repeated pressure loss requires investigation.

Prompt attention to punctures helps protect vehicle handling, tyre performance, and road safety. By checking tyre pressure regularly, responding quickly to warning signs, and relying on professional inspection when damage occurs, drivers can reduce unnecessary risks and keep their vehicles ready for everyday travel.
